- MODERN WEREWOLVES -
~
Ulike vampires and traditional werewolves, modern werewolves are a natural occuring evolution of sorts. Magic did not directly create the modern werewolf. When traditional werewolves or other modern werewolves breed, the pup will be a modern werewolf. Because of this naturally occurring phenomenon, many witches consider moderns to be the nature’s blessed predator.
Unlike traditionals, moderns cannot turn humans into one of their own. Instead, their venom can be freely shared between themselves and other werewolves -even humans and witches. Modern werewolf venom is still lethal to vampires though.
The reaction one has to modern werewolf venom depends on the intent of the giver. If the giver wants to bond with the receiver, or wants to calm or placate them, then the venom will release a compound of melatonin and dopamine. The larger the quantity, the stronger the effect. In order to inject somebody with venom, the modern werewolf must press their tongue to the roof of their mouth. The venom, which is black in color, will subsequently leak down the extended fangs and once the skin is pierced with the teeth, the venom makes its way into the bloodstream and to the brain, where it will interact with various brain chemicals.
If a modern is in the heat of battle, wanting to kill or seriously injure/incapacitate the receiver, then the compound would release melatonin, dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin. Some werewolves have naturally occuring venom levels that are higher than average, and some have lower levels. Usually, low and high levels of venom are balanced out by a low or high resistance, though training can help dramatically. In order to increase venom levels, one must increase the flow of brain chemicals through meditation. In order to increase venom resistance, one must physically inject themselves with venom and gradually increase the amount as time goes on. The effects of a regular dose of venom last four to five hours, while the actual venom stays in the bloodstream for perhaps an hour longer. The more venom one gives, the more that time increases. Venom can be ejected from the stream by cutting into the vein and siphoning it out with a suction device or pushing it up through the skin.
Another use of venom is the application of it in creating mating bonds. Contrary to popular belief, only some werewolves mate for life, but all werewolves can be mated. The shared permanence of the venom works to create a link between the couple and allows them to share things like intent and mild emotion. For example, if your mate is upset, you will feel a slight and fleeting sensation of it that can often be confused for one’s own emotions. Time and regular sharing of venom can strengthen this connection. Mating ‘divorces’ aren’t unheard of. With a modern werewolf, it differs depending on your genetic makeup. Some wolves mate for life, and the loss of their other half does not sever their bond, leaving them alone for the rest of their lives. A werewolf who doesn’t mate for life can sever their mating bond and take a new partner later on. Magic can be used to remove a mating mark; for those who have the bond for life, it is only cosmetic and will not sever the bond but for those who can move on, it does cut the connection.
Modern werewolves, unlike traditionals, can shift into their wolf forms at will. In their wolf forms, an average mod is a little larger than a wild male wolf, though the size of the wolf form may vary greatly depending upon genetics. Shifting, much like any ability, can turn into a trained skill if done enough, augmenting the time between shifting forms. The spectrum can take anywhere from seconds to miliseconds depending on how frequently a werewolf transforms during his/her lifetime. When a werewolf is in four legged form, it is physically at an advantage though some are better at combat on two legs. In wolf form, the modern werewolf is faster, stronger, and the senses are sharper.
Along with being able to change physical form at will, the modern werewolf also has remarkably keen senses, chief among them being the sense of smell. It is very easy for a werewolf to memorize, identify, and track even the most subtle of smells and just like with any other skill, this natural advantage can be honed to deadly precision. The more a werewolf hunts, tracks, and uses his or her nose, the more keen the sense of smell becomes. Some werewolves can simply tell what food you are cooking, while some have such good noses that they can pick up on subtle chemicals and pheromones, allowing them a mild ability to ‘smell’ moods, or where somebody has been.
In an average pack, there is one male and female alpha, one male and female beta, one lead hunter, and one lead scout that make up the higher ranks. Some packs may honor their elders in the upper hierarchy, but some do not. The higher ranks are in charge of taking care of providing for the pack, guiding and teaching, protection, discipline, and decision-making. The middling ranks consist of the bulk of the pack. Hunters, scouts, and sentinels. The omegas may sometimes outnumber the middling ranks and are oftentimes very young members who have yet to claim a place within the ranks, though some are simply wolves who perform the more mundane and domestic tasks that keep a pack running day by day.
A well-run pack is a very dangerous beast, as werewolves work best in groups. The chain of command is very important to follow, and deviation from it can often cause problems in reaching the goal of the pack at large. This is sometimes an issue with the younger members of the pack who are still experimenting and making their way into adulthood, as a werewolf can rise or fall in rank dependant upon things such as age, experience, behavior, deeds, and so on.
Instincts are the central trait in which a werewolf can vary vastly from the next. In general, modern werewolves are attuned to both the animal and human nature. Compared to every other species, they are generally seen as more territorial, possessive, venereal, protective, stubborn, and hot-headed though there are a great many exceptions. They have a very high metabolism and with that comes high energy; it is rare to see a lazy modern werewolf.
As a werewolf ages, especially during puberty, hormones play a large part in dictating actions and thoughts and it isn’t rare to see them acting out much like a human teenager on a more ridiculous scale. The modern werewolf often mellows with age, though not always, and are better able to control their tempers and reactions.
The sense of smell is often the central functioning ability that a werewolf uses when it comes to matters of socialization and instinct. The sense of smell and primitive intuition often give werewolves a quick indication of where an opposing werewolf might fall on the spectrum of hierarchy and strength. One can usually, though not always, tell when they are facing a superior or inferior wolf and there are a few different ways that one must conduct themselves depending on who they are facing.
When facing a more dominant werewolf (be it because of age, experience, lethality, or wisdom,) one must show signs of respect and submission. Good manners, just like in human society, go a long way. Upon first meeting, it’s customary to avert the eyes and lower the chin, tilting the neck to the side slightly. Under more extreme circumstances, such as begging for one’s life, the back of the neck would be completely bared and the head bowed so low that the chin touches the chest.
After the first meeting, werewolves can interact on a normal level, though deferrance should always be shown by the submissive wolf. Listening without interrupting, letting the dominant wolf walk or approach first, using honorifics, and other such polite allowances.
As a dominant wolf, the first meeting with a subordinate is not so theatrical. A slight lift of the chin to raise the head high and a grant of permission for the submissive wolf to be at ease is sufficient. Dominant wolves tend to be able to act as they please, but just as with anything else, nobody likes a pompous person and so general rules of etiquette will still apply if one cares about holding high opinions with others.
When two equal wolves meet for the first time, it is often a very tense exchange as each tries to suss out who falls where. Neither looks down or offers their neck and instead, meet eye to eye aggressively. It should come as no surprise that a fight or disagreement usually follows this, and only the most reasonable werewolves are able to meet on equal footing for the same time and come to a silent understanding.
Werewolves who aren’t familiar with each other never present their backs to one another unless they are completely confident in their abilities, which is sometimes seen as rudely dismissive. Werewolves who aren’t familiar with each other also do not allow each other into their territories, personal space, and touching each others possessions would be seen as strange. For example, two werewolves who hardly know each other would not presume to touch one another. The exception to this general behavior is seen with alphas, who will often share their space and invite strange werewolves into their territory, especially if a recruitment is taking place.
Trust and loyalty are two very important things to werewolves, and it takes quite a bit to earn the former while the breaking of the latter, for some, is a cause for execution.
Another way that werewolves show dominance or superiority, is through the spreading of their scent. Urinating on things, such as making territory boundaries, is quite common. A werewolf’s body fluids tend to smell a good bit stronger than the other species, and urine is no exception- often potent enough for a human to catch the smell. Sometimes possessions and yes, even sometimes people, are marked in this manner depending upon the werewolf in question. Another, less vulgar way of marking people is to simply rub their skin or clothing with one’s own skin, usually done with the palms or the face. This is most often seen with parents and pups, close friends, lovers, or mates; very rarely is this done by werewolves who aren’t close with the person in question. In addition to body fluids, modern werewolves also tend to have a generally stronger scent due to their hyperactive pheromones, and this scent grows stronger as they get closer to their physical peak. For werewolves who prefer to keep their presence more subtle, using scentless soap and rubbing foliage upon their person can help.
On the subject of children, werewolves are known to have multiple offspring at a time, though not always. Their birth form depends upon the shape their mother takes both throughout the pregnancy and during the birthing process, though in this day and age a werewolf is more likely to be born in human form.
From the time of birth until the start of puberty, werewolf children have a very mild, weak scent, evolution’s way to better hide them from predators. As they go through puberty, their scent gets stronger. As children, their senses are more powerful than a human’s, but much less so than an adult werewolf. Things such as sight, smell, and hearing improve with age, experience, and practice.
Modern werewolves can understand the language of wild wolves, though wild wolves cannot always understand a werewolf. When in wolf form, the werewolf will communicate with various growls, whines, snarls, barks, and yips just like a normal wolf. However, due to the higher vocabulary they use in human form, while in wolf form the werewolf unintentionally mashes together sounds of communication that wouldn’t be used by normal wolves.
When speaking to a natural wolf, it is important to simplify speech. For example, instead of asking ‘are you hungry?’ you would ask, ‘you eat food?’ When in human form and speaking to a natural wolf, use the wolf’s language instead of speaking words.
Dogs can also be communicated with, though it takes practice to learn the language. Dogs communicate less with sound and more with body language. A certain combination of sounds to a wolf might mean ‘eat bird,’ while the same combination to a dog might mean ‘eat you.’ The older a wolf or dog gets and the more time it spends with a modern werewolf could yield a higher vocabulary and a wider range of communication, but this takes years to achieve.
Physically, a modern werewolf differs greatly from all other species. They have augmented vocal chords in both wolf and human form, and the addition of age with the help of genetics augments the size to provide what one would call ‘the commanding tone,’ which has the ability to project very far and cause even those who aren’t werewolves to freeze up and snap their attention to the projector. These vocal chords can also help with things such as singing and bouncing the voice; it is unusual for a werewolf to be a bad singer, and many successful ventriloquists can thank their inherited physical attributes for their talents. Older bloodlines also tend to have odd-colored eyes, though it would be difficult to blend into human society with them and so some bloodlines take measures to ‘normalize’ their optical coloring through selective breeding. In human form, modern werewolves can lengthen and detract their fangs and claws at will.
Strengths
- Age Well -Modern werewolves are in peak physical condition for the majority of their lives. That and their bodies constantly repair themselves. Modern wolves do not deteriorate as quickly as humans and can expect to live into the 100s if they look after themselves. They will only begin seeing a decrease in strength, senses and abilities in their 50-60s, depending on their training, lifestyle and skills.
- Strength -When in their human state, a modern werewolf is stronger than a human. In their werewolf state, they are much stronger than a human and the average wolf, but weaker than a traditional werewolf in their wolf state. In their human form, they would be about the same strength as an equivalent vampire, though in their werewolf form, they would be stronger than their equivalent vampire.
- Speed -Modern werewolves are slightly faster than a human in their human state. they are much faster in their wolf form than a human and a traditional werewolf (wolf form). In both forms, werewolves are not as fast as a vampire of the equivalent age or training.
- Shape Shift -Can transform into a wolf at free will without pain.
- Heightened Senses - As a wolf, their senses are as keen as their natural wolf. Their sense of smell is most superior. In their human form, their hearing and sight are slightly stronger than a human. Werewolves have an unrivalled sense of smell when compared to equivalent vampires or humans.
- Quick Recovery - Modern werewolves heal quickly when injured, in both forms, though not as fast as a vampire or hybrid.
Weaknesses
- Cannot Turn-Modern Werewolves cannot turn a human into a traditional or modern werewolf
- Vulnerable-Modern werewolves are vulnerable to most human injuries when in their human and wolf states
- Silver- Modern werewolves are weakened by silver as both humans and wolves
Methods to kill a Traditional Werewolf
Since modern werewolves are mortal, they can be killed much the same way as humans. Because of their increased strength -particularly in their wolf form- some methods are favoured more than others. Because of their increased regeneration, a werewolf can survive some otherwise ‘lethal’ attacks, if they get the chance to heal. To kill a werewolf, it is best to find methods that will end the beast as quickly as possible.
