:: PERSONALITY ::
Yara is very driven when she puts her mind to it. Her ambition and desire for knowledge motivates Yara to always be aiming to better herself. A lot of time and effort is put into her work, to the point where it would be very easy for someone to regard Yara as a workaholic.
Coupled with her ambition, is Yara’s desire to be acknowledged for her efforts. While she is not outwardly arrogant about her skills, she strongly feels that she would have been more successful and more valued if she had been born a male.
Yara is a loyal person, but her ambition is probably what drives her most to follow orders and provide her services. Yara is not a show off, but -now that women are accepted more for their skills outside home economics- will make sure she is valued appropriately for her efforts. Furthermore, Yara does not like pointless distractions. If she sees no value in a conversation, she will bluntly find an out and go back to whatever her project is at the time.
While Yara is not a disbeliever of love, she does not care to find it. She does however, see the value of being mates with the right type of person. Yara is very self-assured, so likes to think she is worthy of a high profile male, such as Spencer or Cion. She does not believe she needs to be in love to be their partner, but would not reject it.
As Yara has Grapheme-color synesthesia, which is what allows her to see numbers and letters in different colours. This ability is particularly useful to her when working on complex algorithms. To ensure her necessity, Yara will design programs that are more or less, unique. She is able to do so with minor tweaks, based on how the codes appear to her in different colours. Yara is definitely the type of person who would take a disadvantage and spin it to be a strength, in some way.
:: HISTORY :: To understand Yara, one has to understand how her life came to be. Yara's grandmother (Maria) was married at the age of 15 to a local fish merchant (Jose). However, Maria never loved him as it was an arranged marriage. Even as the years passed, there was just too little in common between Maria and Jose. Both saw their marriage as more of a task than anything else. They were not unkind to each other, but their hearts were not in it, at least not Maria’s. Jose was able to take more of a fancy in Maria when he had a few drinks under his belt.
When Maria was 17, she met a charming and handsome young Ottoman dye merchant (Yusuf) at the markets. Maria was taken by the beauty of his trade compared to the peasantry, non-prestigious trade of fish mongering. They had an affair together and naturally when a bronze skinned, sharp featured baby girl was born 9 months later, in 1814, it raised suspicions with Jose. Maria named her daughter Ezmerelda. Jose questioned Maria and eventually worked out that she had an affair. He then sold Maria and Ezmerelda into slavery to rid of the shame they had brought him (he was very high strung on reputation for a fish merchant).
They went into slavery as labourers at the docks. Maria died when Ezmerelda was 15 years old of TB, leaving no-one to look out for her. Their master -Martin- was an irish born sailor that had found his fortunes by getting close to the old dockmaster, who left Martin the job when he died. Martin was well and truly an old sailor, favouring many spirits in his dry land duties. One drunken night, after years of lusting for Ezmerelda from afar, he raped her. Ezmerelda gave birth to a baby girl at the age of 18 in 1832 and named her Yara, a name from the stories Maria passed on from her Ottoman lover. After Maria gave birth to who he knew could only be his daughter, Martin claimed that he wanted more able workers, so he sold Ezmerelda and Yara to a slaver that took them to the United States.
They were sold to a mill owner in the state of North Carolina. There, Yara grew up with her mother as a labourer at the mill. The two were lucky, living through a serious accident at the mill that killed 2 other slaves. When Yara was 13 and after the accident, Ezmerelda wanted a better life for her daughter and tried to teach her how to read. Ezmerelda had picked up bits and pieces over the years in the US, as she was older she was trusted and not worried about as much by the mill owner, so she often was in his office, carrying books or papers for him. While learning to read, Yara found the pages, particularly the old tax records and purchase records, had colourful patterns about them, when she told her mother, Ezmerelda warned her to keep that quiet. It was not normal for a girl to be able to see colours where there weren’t any. What was more troubling, was the more Ezmeralda showed Yara how to read, the more the girl commented on the colours. Ezmeralda reluctantly stopped trying to teach her daughter any more, in fear that the wrong person would realise that something was different about her daughter.
One day, when a trader was visiting the mill, Yara was serving the mill owner and the trader tea when she saw her owner give a cheque to the trader that had a funny coloured pattern on it. She mentioned to her owner, saying that something looked wrong with it, and he was enraged. It turned out that he had been trying to avoid taxes and Yara, while she couldn't read very well, picked up on it. He called the church to get rid of her, calling her a heretic due to not understanding her synesthesia. Her master and the church claimed that the devil was showing her the colours. Subsequently, she was locked away in a mental asylum as a 13 year old.
Yara had been at the mental asylum for 5 years before a new doctor came to work there. He was an investor and claimed to have great plans for the institution and their clients. He was an incredibly attractive man and seemed to be willing to work the later shifts, allowing the other employees to take the highly coveted day shifts.
Many of the workers took a great liking to the new doctor and investor. He was kind to his workers and took relatively good care of the clients, or so it seemed. It wasn’t long before the new doctor was the owner of the entire institution.
By the time Yara was 19, whispers that the new doctor was a vampire were spreading throughout the rooms. The more unstable women would claim that he would drink their blood and hold them down with immense strength. Their cries and concerns were only ever met with disbelief. They were clearly crazy and deluded. No one took any notice of the rumors that hung around the fantastic, revolutionary new doctor. Solitary confinement was given to the women who were too loud and vocal about their beliefs. They could not be left to encourage the other patients into hysteria.
One late afternoon, the doctor came to Yara’s room. There were no other staff members around and Yara felt herself feeling dread. The doctor lunged at her and tried to hold her down as he bit into her neck with incredibly sharp teeth. In their struggle, Yara managed to pull the curtains down, showering the doctor with the setting sunlight. The doctor shrunk back into the shadows, his chin covered in her blood and his skin covered in burns. He fled, but the event left Yara intrigued more than anything else. She had not believed the words of the other patients. None of them had wounds to prove that the doctor had bitten them, but Yara did.
Hours later, when the sun had gone down, the doctor returned. He promised to make her wound go away. Yara decided to try her luck and made a deal with him. She would let him feed if he told her what he was. He agreed, amused by her brazen attitude and quick thinking. The arrangement continued for a while before she began to ask for more, things like education, how to read and write. The vampire was initially insulted by her trying to push their arrangement, and fed off her forcefully without giving her any information. Later the next day, just before the sun was due to set, Yara snuck into the vampire's office and attached a piece of string to the venetians that covered his window. She waited outside until she heard him enter the office, then pulled the string, opening the blinds. The vampire was burned again, but admiring her courage and cunning, further agreed to teach her in exchange for an effortless feed. He ended up teaching Yara how to count, read, and write. The way she saw numbers with colour also fascinated him. Out of interest, he let her read the institution's budget documents, and she noticed patterns that showed one of the employees was swindling money from them. Impressed with her skill, the vampire, revealing his true name to be Uriah. The vampire became more and more fascinated with her abilities. Just after her 20th birthday, Uriah decreed that she was cured, as he valued her intelligence and skills, and wanted to her use her abilities as a profitable factor for the institution, rather than just a source of feeding for him. A year later, she fell sick and her condition began to decline at an alarming rate. Uriah was faced with an ultimatum, let his prodigy die, or turn her. It did not take him long to decide. Uriah turned her, not wanting to miss out on the success that the asylum was bringing him.
As a vampire, Yara continued to work with Uriah for a few more years before talk came from France about the proper way to run an asylum. The US regulations were changing in response, and that made Uriah weary. WIth a bit of research, Uriah sold the asylum and bought into a higher security mental institution. All the patients had to be kept away from each other, which made feeding easier for Uriah and Yara to feed.
Uriah worked as a doctor once more and kept Yara on the books. She managed the finances and would come into the main part of the asylum simply to feed. As the years went on, Yara became bored. She was paid well by Uriah and being able to feed without concern was always a benefit, but Yara yearned for more knowledge, more stimulation. The finances were always the same. Yara realised she wanted more than to just be able to make money and feed easily. She wanted a purpose, something to aim towards and she knew she had the ability to do so.
When Yara approached Uriah about her complacency, he was angry at first. WHen scaring her into staying didn’t work, he tried to convince her that they were more comfortable than they could ever hope to be. He raised solid points, particularly about remaining discrete and undetected. They were quickly building their own wealth and Uriah even offered Yara a much bigger cut of the profits. For a little while, Yara accepted, but she had her own plans. She would work with Uriah for a year or two longer, save her money, then leave. She knew he was right about wealth. She was born a slave and had a desire to find her mother and release her if she could.
18 months later, Yara approached Uriah again about her desire to leave to do better things. Again, Uriah tried to convince her to stay with the promise of even more money, however Yara had been siphoning extra money for months. When Uriah realised that money wasn’t going to convince his prodigy to stay, he tried to appeal to her by declaring his love for her. While there had been intimate moments between the two over the years, Yara was very aware that she didn’t love him and was convinced that feeling was mutual. Unable to convince her to stay, Uriah let her leave.
In 1865, Yara made her way back to the mill where she and her mother had worked, only to find that she had been sold again. Yara followed the paper trail finally to a cotton plantation further south. When Yara found her mother, she was shocked to see that her mother had become involved with another slave (Richard Hunt) and had two children with him, a 17 year old girl (Anna) and a 14 year old boy (Thomas). Yara tried to feel happy for her mother, but couldn’t help but feel that her mother had moved on from her. Nonetheless, Yara spent a big portion of her money for the release of her family, after spending a lot trying to find Ezmeralda in the first place. Reluctantly, Yara took her family back to Uriah’s institute not even 10 months later and asked for her job back. With the little remaining money she had, Yara helped her family find somewhere to live and pointed her family towards work.
Uriah was too pleased to have his prodigy back to make much of a fuss about her having to come back to him. It wasn’t long before Yara became complacent again, but knew she could not leave while she still have a family to care for. Luckily, in 1877, Anna got married to a cotton farmer, which meant one less person for Yara to worry about. In her spare time, Yara would try and learn more about how the world worked around her and discovered a passion for science.
Even after the death of her mother, Yara stayed with Uriah for years, slowly working on her own private wealth. Since Uriah was taking her desires for education more seriously, he tried to give her opportunities to better her education, while still working for Uriah. With some money and vampire charm, Uriah arranged for Yara to attend university in Michigan the following year. In 1881 they sold up their current institution and bought into another one closer to the university. Uriah had already taught Yara the importance of moving after a couple of decades to avoid drawing suspicion. Before she started at the university though, Uriah managed to find a witch and purchased both he and Yara a daylight ring. Suddenly, the world was a bigger place for Yara.
Yara enjoyed her time at university and discovered a passion for science. It took her some time to convince her professors to allow her to study areas other than home economics, nursing and teaching. Again money was waved around and Yara made full use of her charms. She enjoyed to study and tried to learn anything she could regarding science and mathematics. Many of her peers did not like that she was studying in male dominated areas, but she had no care for their petty insecurities. Yara often impressed her professors though, but when asked how she seemed to understand the content so well -especially for a woman- Yara would skip around giving a solid answer. She had been sent away once for her abilities and while that lead to her new life, she was not about to draw that attention upon herself again.
For years, Yara was satisfied again. She studied all she could that had anything to do with mathematics and science, in particular chemistry and physics. She found numbers fascinating and yearned for more opportunities to do something with her skills. Luckily, women were becoming more and more accepted in science based careers. Yara stayed with Uriah until the second world war. With so many men enlisting to go to war, there were new opportunities for women to enter the science fields. In 1942, Yara was given the opportunity to work on the Manhattan Project. That was when she left Uriah for good. While she appreciated all that he had done for her, she was ready to do something entirely for herself.
Yara threw herself into her work on the Manhattan Project. For four years, she was in her element, but she was beginning to feel the desire for company, as much as it frustrated her. While she and Uriah never loved each other romantically, they had been a strong unit with respect for each other. Yara hated that she missed companionship, as she wanted nothing more than to make use of her abilities.
When the project was disbanded, Yara moved away again, despite promising job openings. She could not stay in the same place for too long. Thankfully, Yara discovered the fascinating world of technology. Calculators and computers were beginning to be produced and Yara found something to distract her from her loneliness. Finding work where she could, Yara found herself travelling towards California, as there was promising development there in technology.
If Yara thought she enjoyed Science, it was nothing on what she thought about technology. It was like there was an entirely new language used for computers and Yara understood it with such clarity, she worked hard on the development of ERA 1101 in 1950.
As technology continued to boom, so did Yara’s ambition. She understood technology, but had to work nearly as hard to convince men that she was smart enough. Being a woman was both a blessing and a curse.
In 1952, Yara heard rumours of a revolutionary vampire who commanded a large vampire clan. Over the years, Yara had met other vampires, especially while she was with Uriah. She had also learned about werewolves, but made a point of avoiding their territory. While Uriah had trained Yara, it was clear that her strengths were not in her physical abilities. She obviously made up for it with her mind.
With curiosity getting the better of her, Yara found herself taking interest in learning about the Thraeston clan. Later that year, Yara discovered that the leader’s pride and joy was that of his sister and nephew. Yara had long since assumed that she could not procreate. The idea of being able to actually have a family was oddly appealing to Yara. She had spent most of her life wanting to pursue her career and education, not a family. Yara put it down to the fact that she wanted what she thought she couldn’t have.
Yara watched the clan, and finally set her sights on the infamous leader, Spencer Robinson. With her wealth of knowledge in mathematics, science and technology, Yara approached the clan, deciding to end her time as a lone vampire. Her ambition wanted her to be a crucial part of a large, well known and established clan. She liked that Spencer was driven, but it was not until she was welcomed into the ranks, that she realised just how special the existence of his nephew was. Cion was the only born member of the entire clan. His mother had married a traditional werewolf and bared his son. Spencer had apparently tried to find a mate in the past, but none had given him children. Yara saw an opportunity open before her, she just had to prove her worth.
Having come to understand that her abilities was known as synesthesia, Yara made short work of the finance wing. Before long, she was in charge of everything that had to do with finance. She did her job with such skill and aptitude, Yara found herself offering her skills by developing a small technology faculty on top of her financial work. Yara made herself indispensable in a very short amount of time, yet had not seemed to attract Spencer’s direct attention. He valued her work, that was very clear, but he never seemed to act as if he had any romantic interest in Yara.
To be fair, Yara was not sure if she actually liked Spencer, or just wanted to be his partner atop the Thraston clan. If only she could have proven that she could produce children. Then, she was sure she would have had Spencer’s attention.
As years passed, Yara understood that Spencer would not be interested in her as a mate, much to her frustration. She did believe in love, but thought it was highly overrated. She had never benefited from a romantic relationship in her rather long life, but did understand that a good partnership could be just as good, if not better. She had proven herself in her work, plus she was an older vampire than Spencer, yet it was not enough for him to consider her anything more than his most valuable finance vampire.
Yara then turned her attentions to the nephew, Cion. She was more than well aware that the highly argumentative boy was truly a marvelous sight to see. Over the years, Yara had come to understand that Cion was a hybrid, both vampire and werewolf. His blood also held healing properties, which was how they could heal their ranks from werewolf bites.
Yara quickly came to the conclusion that he was in many ways, a better prospect than Spencer for a mate. Yara made herself known to Spencer, made sure he knew of her work and her talent, in hopes that she would be considered worthy enough to be paired with Cion. Still, she was never considered. No one was.
Part of Yara was resentful that even though she was irreplaceably valuable to the clan, she was never considered for anything more. Spencer regarded fertility above most other things. Even though that was not Yara’s passion, she wanted it, because it was what was valued in the clan. It infuriated her that she could not prove herself.
When a new girl was welcomed into the clan, only to have killed her sire later, Yara was furious when she discovered that the girl was given time to spend with Cion. How was it, that a fledgling was deemed worthy enough of Cion’s attention? It did please Yara when Cion seemed to not have any romantic interest in the girl. However, that satisfaction was short lived. The two were constantly leaving for hours at a time each night. Finally, Yara took it upon herself to expose them. Perhaps then, she would be considered a worthy partner for Cion.
Again, Yara did not feel she felt anything more than just attraction towards Cion. She did not love him, but was sure if she was given the chance, could try to develop those sorts of feelings.
Decided, Yara instructed one of the girls working in the financial department with her (Yara knew this girl harboured a fierce desire for Cion herself) to go and spy on Cion and Xandra. The girl did not need much convincing. She was incredibly jealous and was so blinded by it, that she had no idea that Yara was sending her on a task for her own gain.
When the girl returned and reported that Xandra had been practising her shooting, Yara marched the girl straight to Spencer, in hopes of some acknowledgement. Still, there was nothing, other than Xandra was whisked off to the ranks.
Yara choked down her bubbling frustration and continued on her work. She was becoming more and more involved with the technology side of things as the years went on, working on surveillance, telecommunications and her own unique codes to protect their computers from external threats. While she still managed the financial wing, Yara spent most of her time working with technology. She made her systems incredibly useful to the clan, always finding ways to prove that she was worthy.
Skip to the present day and Yara is part of Spencer’s elite rank, but still not considered worthy enough to be considered a mate prospect for either Spencer or Cion. Yara did hear about Cion’s first mission though, to go and find a female hybrid and bring her back to the clan. Yara did not like the idea of some random girl being considered good enough for Cion, but could see the appeal; she was a hybrid.
Yara knew she had to work quickly, so approached Spencer, asking him to send her with them. Initially he adamantly refused, but Yara spun a convincing case that she could monitor the group from afar, with bugs and surveillance. She would be their eyes and ears and keep in contact with them and the clan. She would be invaluable out on the mission. As if seeing her for the first time, Spencer allowed her to go. There was no spark per say in Spencer’s eye, but he was noticing her and yet another benefit she could provide. She just needed to do that with Cion.
