- TRADITIONAL WEREWOLVES -
~
What many mortals don’t realise, is that there are actually two variations of the werewolf species; the ‘traditional’ and the ‘modern’. While the traditional werewolves were the intended species, the modern variation has rapidly overtaken the former. To make the most sense of the two variations, I will cover them both separately.
Legend has it that werewolves were created be a natural predator of vampires. Th traditional werewolf is the first of the werewolf kind. Traditionals or ‘trads’ were once humans who have been bitten by another traditional wolf. Once bitten, the venom will attach itself to the host, much like a parasite. From then on, the trad will transform into a wolf during each full moon. The parasitic wolf gene is not really a part of the host’s person, therefore when the host transforms, they lose control of their body and mind. Since the transformation signifies when the wolf is taking over, the process is known to be incredibly painful for the host.
When the wolf is in control, the beast is incredibly dangerous. The wolf does not know of the host’s familial bonds with other humans. Traditionals have been known to kill their loved ones when in their wolf form and never have any recollection of doing so. Because of this, traditionals are usually avoided. The threat they pose to pack members and loved ones is incredibly high. There have been reports of some trads not showing aggression towards other wolves and werewolves during the full moon, but the reason behind this has not been proven.
Originally, trads were all two-legged wolf-men, but when the curse spread to Asia, the gene mutated and allowed for the creation of more natural looking werewolves. It has been recorded that the werewolf gene spread across the world rather quickly. Now, it is not uncommon for a traditional to be either ‘two-legged’ or four.
Unlike vampires, traditional werewolves are mortal beings. The werewolf gene does provide the host with some assistance though. Even when in their real, human form, a traditional will have heightened senses; particularly smell. A traditional will also regenerate their health far quicker than a human, but not as quickly as a vampire. Since the wolf gene acts like a parasite, it needs its host to be healthy. A traditional werewolf will have a faster metabolism and will be able to physically push themselves more than they may have been able to as a human. The regenerative part of the wolf gene does allow for traditionals to be at their physical best for most of their prime life, but the strain of transforming each month does eventually take its toll on the body. While a traditional will seem incredibly healthy in its prime, its condition will rapidly decline as they enter late adulthood. Traditionals have been known to have shorter lifespans as a result, with many recorded cases not living past 65 years of age.
It has also been noted that a trad’s senses will heighten the closer they are to a full moon, but this seems to vary, depending on the individual in question. Additionally, traditional werewolves are susceptible to silver. The precious metal burns a werewolf on contact. Naturally, many hunters have taken to using silver bullets and arrowheads against werewolves, but what some do not realise is, that a werewolf can die a normal, mortal death. While traditionals can regenerate their health quicker than humans, they can still perish as a result of extreme blood loss, drowning, etc.
Strengths
- Transforms into a powerful werewolf every full moon
- Traditionals are stronger in their wolf form than modern werewolves
- A trad will have a faster metabolism than humans
- Quick regeneration
- A traditional werewolf bite will turn another human
Weaknesses
- No control over the wolf form during a full moon
- Transformations are excruciatingly painful
- Traditional werewolves are slower than modern werewolves
- Generally, traditionals are seen as outcasts by other werewolves
- Cannot shift into their wolf at will
- Burned by silver
Methods to kill a Traditional Werewolf
Since traditional werewolves are mortal, they can be killed much the same way as humans. Because of their increased strength -particularly in their wolf form- some methods are favoured more than others. Because of their increased regeneration, a werewolf can survive some otherwise ‘lethal’ attacks, if they get the chance to heal. To kiss a werewolf, it is best to find methods that will end the beast as quickly as possible.
- Beheading
- Burning
- Drowning
- Bullet/arrowhead to the heart
