- WITCHES -
~
As far as anyone knows, witches are the only, naturally occuring supernatural species. In all but power, witches are simply no different to humans. They possess no superior strength or speed, nor are witches immortal. Additionally, witches cannot be identified by personal scent, so can go undetected, even amongst vampires and werewolves.
Legend has it that it was a witch by the name of Lucielle that created vampires and traditional werewolves, but the exact origins of witches remains unclear. It can be assumed though, that witches could have been around for as long as man.
According to studies found, all witches have access to the same forms of magic, much like humans have the same ability to use their limbs as much as the body will allow. Some people are better at endurance, some are better at strength, others at intellectual endeavours and so forth. Witchcraft appears to be the same. The opportunity is there for all, but depends on the individual’s strengths, weaknesses and aptitude. Just like some people can be naturally talented at dancing, some witches are more talented at elemental magic. It is truly fascinating, that magic is so broad, yet individual witches could have their own unique flare to whatever specialisation they happen to focus on.
While magic can be accessed by all, many witches rely on the teachings of their covens. Because of this, it is very common for other cultures and factions to have their own interpretation of the same spell or utility. For instance, an individual can take a spell and adapt it to their liking, if they possess the skill and patience to do so.
The most common forms of magic, seem to stem from Latin, Ancient Greek and Futhark, but are not necessarily limited to those three. Language and dialect does not seem to restrict witches from using magic, but does of course create such extensive diversity, that it is unlikely that any one witch could ever learn every spell there is to know. While knowledge of magic is generally passed down from generation to generation, new spells do need to be learned. Much like a musician playing a new song, success is never immediate. Practise and training is key.
Just like any other skill, magic needs to be practised to be perfected. Some witches of course are more naturally talented than others, but the fact still remains that a well trained, practised witch will likely hold up better than a witch with little to know training. Spells are also dangerous and can be extremely taxing on the individual. Many witches have been known to perish due to overexertion, so care needs to be taken. Additionally, witches with the inclination to experiment with spells and others have also been known to suffer terrible accidents. A thorough understanding of the art needs to be maintained.
While most witches tend to stick to their family or coven, this is not always the case. It is not unheard of for a witch to be alone without the support of a coven, though it does make it more difficult for them to access spells and magic training. Covens can also give witches support in power and defence as well. Like most things, witches find strength in numbers.
For reasons unknown, sometimes magic can present itself in a person with no magical heritage. In ancient times, these people were regarded in many cultures as gifted. Some witches have lived long lives before discovering their powers, others were noticed from a very young age after displaying outbursts of magical energy. These outbursts are usually triggered by spikes in strong emotions, such as anger or fear. Past and current documentation suggests at any rate, that a new, inexperienced witch needs support in order to both maintain their safety and remain hidden from the human world.
Strengths
- Possess the ability to use magic
- Cannot be detected by scent or appearance (otherwise seem human)
- Strength in numbers (covens)
Weaknesses
- Mortal - a witch’s life expectancy is comparable to that of a human
- No physical advantages like other supernatural species
Methods to kill a Witch
- Witches are as mortal and therefore physically vulnerable as a regular human, however the ease or difficulty to kill on would depend on the type of magic they possess. Witches should always be approached with caution.
